ENGINEERING FACILITIES
- Electric, electronic and dielectric test instruments of various
kinds including oscilloscopes, function generators and chart recorders
- Bright field optical microscope for observation to 100X magnification
- Specimen preparation facility
- PC and Macintosh based computers, including math co-processors,
for data acquisition and analysis, and database compilation.
We also have a unique testing service facility for extremely high precision
measurement of material properties such as thermal expansion and thermal
conductivity/thermal diffusivity. As an example, we have the capability
to measure, by optical means, the coefficient of thermal expansion
(CTE) in the range of 20 parts per billion per °C. This facility
is one of only four in the entire USA. Through our network with the
neighboring Yale University, the University of Connecticut and the
Universities of Bridgeport and New Haven, we have full access to Fourier
transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron
microscopes with energy dispersion X-ray analysis (EDAX), x-ray diffraction
with small angle precision capability, and hardness and micro-hardness
testers.
